Characterist in the news: Sentencing verdict of Chew Eng Han (29 January 2019)

Characterist LLC’s Adrian Wee and Rachel Soh represented Chew Eng Han at his sentencing hearing on 29 January 2019.

Chew Eng Han was convicted, together with 5 other prominent church leaders, of criminal breach of trust in the highly-publicised City Harvest Church Case.

He was arrested on 21 February 2018 while on a sampan intending to leave Singapore.

On 12 December 2018, Mr Chew had been found guilty of two charges: one, a charge under Section 5(5) of the Immigration Act, for attempting to leave Singapore from Pulau Ubin by boat, and two, a charge under Section 204A of the Penal Code read with Section 511 of the Penal Code, for attempting to intentionally defeat the course of justice.

Following written and oral sentencing submissions by both parties, the Court has sentenced Mr Chew to 3 months’ imprisonment on the Immigration Act charge and 10 months’ imprisonment on the Penal Code charge, ordered to run consecutively for a total of 13 months and to commence at the expiration of Mr Chew’s existing sentence of 3 years and 4 months’ imprisonment.
